A Funny Thing Happened to Us on the Way to Miami . . .

About six years ago, my husband and I went on a Caribbean cruise. And, since we were on a budget, we decided to fly into Ft. Lauderdale and drive to Miami (where the ship departed) instead of flying directly there.

Back then, GPS systems in rental cars were in their “adolescent” years. Couple that with the fact that my husband and I are directionally challenged–even with the assistance of GPS–and you’ve got a recipe for disaster. (Or at least a funny story.)

We left the airport completely exhausted, since we’d taken the redeye from the west coast to the east coast. I entered what I’d thought to be the address to our hotel in Miami, and off we went.

We did the best we could–while being half-asleep and half-hungry–to stay on the “highlighted route.” But, of course, I went south when I should have gone west, and all of the sudden–we were lost.

Not “kind of lost.” But “big time lost.” My error landed us in Little Havana. In a rented white Volvo. That was supposed to have GPS.

That’s two VERY caucasian tourists, in an obvious rental car, in Little Havana.

Of course, after some meaningless bickering and a few scary moments, we got back on track and to our hotel safely. We had a fantastic time on our cruise, and returned with some great stories to tell.

We haven’t been to Miami since, but we’ve always wanted to go back. And, before our visit, we’ll make sure to plot out our course well in advance and maybe even take a few sightseeing tours with Trusted Tours and Attractions. They offer great discounts for purchasing tickets to museums, city attractions, and sightseeing tours online at their site.

You should stop by their website soon–they’re entering anyone who signs up for their free newsletter in a drawing for a new handheld GPS system!
